Biography Of George MacDonald
George MacDonald was born at 41 Duke Street in Huntly in 1824. He studied at Aberdeen University. From there he entered Highbury Theological College in London and then became a Calvinist preacher in Sussex. In later life he became Professor of English Literature at Bedford College and also lectures at King's College. He died in 1905. The Aberdonian writer works included poems, mythical and fantasy stories, novels and children's stories.

Friends of George MacDonald included CS Lewis, who created the magical world of Narnia, JRR Tolkien who created the mythical realm of Middle Earth for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit and Lewis Carroll who wrote Alice in Wonderland and Alice Through the Looking Glass.
There is a memorial to him in Huntly and an English Heritage blue plaque at his London Home, 20 Albert Street, where he lived from 1860 - 1863 and wrote some of his work.

In 2007 Huntly, Aberdeenshire celebrated the life and works of George MacDonald by staging a week of free talks, exhibitions, walks in the local area such as a MacDonald fantasy walk by storyteller Grace Bank and film screenings. These free events were organised by the Deveron Arts and took place from the 2 to 4 March. To coincide with the events Scottish sculptor Kenny Hunter was commissioned to built a 6ft sculpture which was unveiled on the 2 March 2007. There was also a reunion by the Gordon Schools.
A new book about George MacDonald was published on the 2 March 2007 during the event. It was written by critic and cultural commentator Duncan McLaren.
