Gleneagles

The first that aboutaberdeen.com love to visit is the world famous Gleneagle Hotel in Perthshire. It is about a two and a half hour drive from Aberdeen.

My new novel:

The Fence Aberdeen Zombie post apocalyptic military survival Novel Book

The Aberdeen skies are under attack from an enemy jet. It is spilling a strange yellow smoke. Minutes later, people start killing each other.
Former Royal Air Force Regiment Gunner Jason Harper witnesses this and then his wife, Pippa, telephones him, shouting that she needs him. They then get cut off. He sets straight out, unprepared for the nightmare that unfolds during his journey. Everyone seems to want to kill him.
Along the way, he pairs up with fellow survivor Imogen. But she enjoys killing the living dead far too much. Will she kill Jason in her blood thirst? Or will she hinder his journey through this zombie filled dystopian landscape to find his pregnant wife?
The Fence is the first in this series of post-apocalyptic military survival thrillers from the torturous mind of local horror and science fiction novel writer C.G. Buswell.

5 Star Hotel Scotland

There is a large free car park with several disabled parking bays. A valet and porter service operates so drivers can either park and carry their cases to the entrance where porters await or drive to the entrance and allow the valets to attend to your luggage and vehicle. Our cases have always arrived within a few minutes of entering our rooms.

A disabled access ramp or stairs gives entry to Gleneagles Hotel in Auchterarder. The concierge desk is to the left and their are two checking in desks straight ahead. The reception staff, as with all the staff, are friendly, welcoming and smile a lot! Check in is effortless and a member of reception shows you to your room or suite and explains the facilities of the room such as the mini bar, TV, freeview television, wifi internet access and to ensure your comfort.

Leisure Facilities

Residents have free access to the leisure facilities which includes single sex sauna and unisex saunas, indoor jacuzzi and outdoor jacuzzi for when the fine Scottish weather is out, steam room, swimming pool, family pool and children's paddling pool. There is a rear elevator at the rooms which takes guests directly to the pool area so that you can wear the provided dressing gowns and slippers over your swimming costume. The slippers are designed for single use and checking with housekeeping we were able to take them home since their quality was so good that they could be reused.

For the more active there is a gym and of course the world famous golf course. Golfing packages are available. This includes the PGA Centenary 18 hole golf course, the Kin's and Queen's courses and the 9 hole wee course. Lessons, posture and grip analysis can be taken at the golf academy. There is also the opportunity to take part in clay target shooting, horse ride, take a falconry lesson with a Harris hawk or other bird of prey experience, off road driving, archery, fishing and gun dog experiences. Within the grounds there is a maze, pitch n putt, croquet, bowls and tennis courts.

Aberdeen Lynne Golden Retriever

Have you seen my beautiful golden retriever Lynne out and about in Aberdeen? Ask her for a high-five! She's a Bravehound PTSD assistance dog, so we'll often be in shops, restaurants, and the cinema together.

We've written a book where I talk about growing up in Aberdeen and then joining the army to be a medic and nurse, and developing military Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

I also talk about losing my son to suicide and the therapy I have had at Royal Cornhill Hospital and grief support groups in Aberdeen.

The author, Damien Lewis, said of Lynne:

"A powerful account of what one dog means to one man on his road to recovery. Both heart-warming and life-affirming. Bravo Chris and Lynne. Bravo Bravehound."

Room service turns down the beds, changes towels and restocks the complimentary still and sparkling water, hot chocolate, coffee, tea, biscuits and milk. There is also the option to use the room telephone to ring housekeeping, reception and other areas should you need help or room service such as drinks, meals or snacks. The evening room service includes leaving an info sheet with the next day's expected weather, available entertainment, opening times of the shops such as Mappin and Webb and Essentials.

A resort map is given at check in to help you get around the complex. As well as a floor plan it also includes a cycling, walking or jogging map

One of the things that makes this the top 5 star hotel in Scotland in the opinion of www.aboutaberdeen.com is the small things. For example when checking in we were asked if the stay was for a special occasion. On the visit to celebrate a birthday my wife was given a gift of a lovely compact mirror. On checking out we were given a gift of handmade shortbread biscuits from the shortbread house in Edinburgh for our journey home.

Restaurants

There are several restaurants at Gleneagles which includes the Mediterranean Deseo restaurant, the Bar, Tryst and Dormy Clubhouse. These range from snack meals, five course dining and the two Michelin star restaurant by top chef Andrew Fairlie. A review of this can be read on the AboutAberdeen Michelin Star Restaurant page.

Prices in the restaurants are seasonable and the food excellent from some of Scotland's finest chefs. Each dining area was well staffed and the waiters knowledgeable and have a superb knack of keeping the diner at ease whilst being able to explain and describe each meal. Aboutaberdeen took the opportunity to try some courses never eaten before such as roast langoustines served with baby artichokes and fennel puree and the waiter took the time to explain this course to us with no sign of pretension like other high class restaurants. There is a dress code of no jeans nor trainers. Most guests wore suits and dresses and in the 2 Michelin Andrew Fairlie restaurant a suit for the men and dress for the lady was worn and expected of the diners.

Breakfast At Gleneagles

That said we dressed up for breakfast only to fee over dressed when we saw fellow diners wearing jeans, t-shirts, joggers, trainers etc. The strict dress code was just for dinner. Though this did not detract from an excellent breakfast, by far the best breakfast we have ever enjoyed. There was simply something for everyone. Breakfast starts with being meeted and greeted and then shown to a table where huge pots of fresh tea and coffee is served along with a jug of freshly squeezed orange juice and toast. More drinks such as smoothies, milk and fruit juices are in the buffet. The full Scottish breakfast at Gleneagles Hotel is silver service, like dinner. There is a choice of freshly prepared breakfast such as 28 day old beef with eggs, porridge with Drambuie and raspberries, Loch Fyne kippers of Finnan haddock or a sumptuous breakfast from the buffet. Aboutaberdeen.com choose the buffet. We started with yoghurt, fresh fruit, dried fruit and some Danish pastries and Scotch pancakes, then moved on to choose from the range of cereals. The king of breakfasts then allowed us to move onto the cooked breakfast buffet which included really meaty sausages, a choice of bacon, a variety of eggs such as eggs Benedict, scrambled eggs with salmon, haddock and potatoes, cold meats such as ham, fresh salmon, haggis, white pudding, black pudding, mushrooms, beans, tomatoes,

It is served from 7:30 to 10:30am and can be eaten in the Strathearn restaurant and the adjoining conservatory. Ingredients are top of the range and sourced locally. For example the apple juice is from Cairn O Mohr and the honey from Gillies fine food in the Scottish Borders. The price of breakfast is included in the nightly room cost.

Spa Treatments

Spa treatments are available at the ESPA treatment rooms. This includes massages, facials and body wraps. It is recommended that spa treatments be booked when making accommodation reservations since these get booked up very quickly.

The salon and barber shop is open during the day to help you prepare for the evening. The salon can provide colouring, highlights, cutting, styling, waxing, manicures and pedicures. The barber includes traditional wet shave using dovo razors for the gents.

Children are made welcome and have their own playrooms and zones for teenagers. These include arts and crafts, sandpits, playhouses, play stations, pool table, juke box, internet access and table football.

There is a small, exclusive shopping area which includes fashion outlets such as Hawick Cashmere, Dunhill London, Escada and Impromptu. Gifts from Gleneagles sell branded giftware. Essentials sells newspapers, toiletries, postcards and other last minute purchases that saves you leaving the complex for the day to day things during your relaxing stay.
